Refined and seed oils

Why Everykind denies sunflower, rice bran, canola, soy, cottonseed, corn, and unnamed vegetable oils in snacks, and which oils pass.

Not medical advice. No cure claims. Inclusion rules live on The Standard.

What it is

“Seed oils” here means common industrial fry and roasting fats — especially sunflower, rice bran, canola/rapeseed, soybean, cottonseed, and corn oil — plus catch-all “edible vegetable oil” and explicitly refined versions of even otherwise acceptable oils (for example refined groundnut when the pack does not show cold-pressed / kachchi ghani where we require it).

Why it is a concern

  • Refined and commodity seed oils are the default for namkeen, chips, and sev; short clean labels usually name a traditional fat instead.
  • Vague “vegetable oil” blocks verification — we cannot Keep what we cannot identify.
  • Some brands market “natural” while the panel still lists sunflower or refined oil. That mismatch fails our transparency bar.

This is a catalog screen, not a claim that seed oils are uniquely toxic in every diet context.

Safer alternatives we already list

Allowlist oils: coconut, ghee, groundnut (prefer cold-pressed), mustard, sesame.

What we do not claim

We do not tell people to eliminate every seed oil from their kitchen. We do refuse to hero snacks that hide or default to denied fry fats. Full rules: The Standard — snacks.
